TDS Calculator
Tax deducted at source, by payment type. Find the TDS rate and amount for common payment types, with the threshold that triggers deduction.
About the TDS Calculator
Tax Deducted at Source collects tax at the moment income is paid rather than at the end of the year. Each payment type has its own rate and its own annual threshold below which nothing is deducted, and a missing PAN raises the rate sharply. Select the payment type to see the rate, the threshold and the amount deductible.
How TDS is computed
TDS = payment amount x applicable rate, once the annual threshold is crossed
- Threshold
- Aggregate annual payment below which no TDS is deducted
- No-PAN rate
- Section 206AA raises the rate where PAN is not furnished
Rates and thresholds change with each Finance Act. Confirm the current figures before relying on a deduction.
Using this calculator
- Choose the type of payment being made.
- Enter the total amount for the financial year.
- Confirm whether PAN has been provided.
- Read the rate, threshold and TDS deductible.
TDS Calculator FAQs
What is TDS?
Tax Deducted at Source requires the payer to withhold tax when making certain payments and deposit it with the government against the recipient's PAN. It appears in Form 26AS and is adjusted against your final liability when you file.
What happens if TDS exceeds my actual tax liability?
You claim a refund when filing your return. Because TDS is deducted at flat rates regardless of your slab or deductions, over-deduction is common for people with income below the taxable threshold.
How do I avoid TDS on interest income?
Submit Form 15G, or Form 15H if you are a senior citizen, to your bank at the start of the financial year. These declare that your total income falls below the taxable limit, so no deduction should be made.
Why is TDS higher without a PAN?
Section 206AA requires deduction at a higher rate when PAN is not furnished, because the department otherwise cannot credit the tax to anyone. Providing PAN restores the normal rate.
Is TDS the same as my total tax?
No. TDS is an advance collection against your eventual liability. Your final tax is computed on total income across all sources, and TDS already deducted is subtracted from it when you file your return.
