About the Car Loan EMI Calculator

A car is a depreciating asset financed with an appreciating cost, so the tenure decision matters more than it does for a home loan. Stretching a car loan to seven years lowers the EMI but often leaves you owing more than the vehicle is worth for much of the term. Check the total interest here before accepting a dealership finance offer.

    The maths

    EMI formula

    EMI = [P x r x (1 + r)^n] / [(1 + r)^n - 1]

    P
    Principal loan amount
    r
    Monthly interest rate (annual rate / 12 / 100)
    n
    Loan tenure in months

This is a reducing-balance loan: the EMI stays constant, but the interest share falls and the principal share rises with every instalment.

    How to use it

    Using this calculator

    1. Enter the on-road price less your down payment.
    2. Set the interest rate offered by the bank or dealer.
    3. Choose a tenure, commonly three to seven years.
    4. Compare total interest across tenures before deciding.
    Questions

    Car Loan EMI Calculator FAQs

    How is EMI calculated?

EMI = [P x r x (1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1], where P is the principal, r the monthly interest rate and n the tenure in months. The instalment stays fixed while the split between interest and principal shifts over time.

Does a longer tenure reduce the cost of a loan?

No. A longer tenure lowers the monthly EMI but raises total interest substantially, because the outstanding principal is reduced more slowly. The amortisation table below shows exactly how much extra interest a longer term costs.

    How does prepayment help?

A prepayment reduces the outstanding principal directly, so every future interest calculation works on a smaller base. Prepaying early in the tenure saves far more than the same amount prepaid near the end.

How much down payment should I make on a car?

Lenders typically finance 80-90% of the on-road price. A larger down payment reduces both interest and the risk of owing more than the car is worth, which matters because vehicles depreciate fastest in the first three years.

Is dealer finance cheaper than a bank loan?

Not usually. Dealer arrangements can carry higher effective rates or bundled add-ons even when the headline rate looks attractive. Compare the total payable, including processing fees and insurance bundling, rather than the advertised rate.

Can I claim tax benefit on a car loan?

Salaried individuals cannot. If the vehicle is used for business, the interest may be claimed as a business expense and depreciation may be available. Personal-use car loans carry no income tax deduction.
